There is a bug in Windows XP and the way that the binding order handles DNS requests when connected via VPN. The VPN adapter DNS should be checked first, then the rest, but this isn't the case according to Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB311218.
The resolution for this problem is to modify your registry and put the WAN adapter at the top of the binding order. You would think that since this problem has been around at least since February 28, 2007 that Microsoft would have released a patch, but nope, I still have to manually modify each of our machines with this work-around.
Update 1: Spencer pointed out that I had the year 1007 instead of 2007, changed.
Update 2: For this change to take affect you MUST reboot your computer right after you make the change in the registry!
