Mozilla Thunderbird
On Tuesday I downloaded a copy of Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7.2, which is a newer release then the one I used way back in the 0.2 days. I didn't really care for what I saw that early on, however, now I'm very impressed with the speed and simple yet robustness of the application. I love that it's less then 7MB to download and runs so quickly on my system. With a built-in junk email feature, the ability to use Themes and Extensions, not to mention that it's not a security hazard to use is just too appealing! I'm really enjoying it so give it a whirl if you haven't already.
I did have a little trouble brining my 600MB mailbox over from Outlook and 357 contacts. While Thunderbird has a Import feature for Outlook (as well as Outlook Express and Eudora), for some reason when I tried to import my Outlook mail and addresses it would tell me that it couldn't find the mail or addresses. I finally found this post that suggested a two step process.
First I opened Outlook Express, imported my e-mail from Outlook to Outlook Express, then into Thunderbird, worked great. I then exported my Outlook Contacts into a CSV file, moved the columns around to match up with what Thunderbird wanted (try a quick import first and it will show the fields in the order that Thunderbird wants them in). My mailboxes imported in less then 2 minutes, not bad for a 600MB mailbox!
Anyway, I'm very happy so far using Thunderbird, so if you feel like getting excited over email again, give it a try!
