SPAM filtering

If you’ve been using e-mail for more then a week no doubt you have a free flow of SPAM. At my new job we use a product GFI Mail Essentials for SPAM control. It runs on the SMTP of your organization and uses many different ways of filtering HAM (legitimate e-mail) from SPAM such as whitelist, blacklist, Bayesian, DNS blacklist, header checking and keyword checking. One thing that is neat about how it works is the Bayesian analysis filter.. For the first week after installation it works in a training mode and learns from the content of the e-mail sent out what words are used in HAM e-mail. After a week when you turn on the Bayesian analysis filter it uses that database to determine what is HAM and SPAM coming into your organization. It also will allow you to add any person you send mail to outside of your organization to have their e-mail automatically added to its whitelist. It works over 90% for our organization and the others that I’ve installed it on. Give it a look over if you haven’t already.
