Using VMWare
I decided to use VMWare on my laptop instead of VPC because VMWare let's me have more control over the networking configuration then VPC, even though VPC feels "smoother". I did find a nice article comparing the two, although using VMWare 4.52 instead of the current 5.0, and VPC 2004 over at Ars Technica.
