StarOffice/OpenOffice Challenge - Day 1

So today was my first day using just the StarOffice/OpenOffice product, none of the MS Office apps (other then Outlook for e-mail) were used. Here are my observations so far: Writer: I didn't use this too much, but I did have to do a e-mail merge for our Communications department. They were VERY impressed in how well it did verse the severe trouble they've had using Word/Excel/Outlook 2000 (Gold as SP1+ "broke" the e-mail merge feature). The Mail Merge Wizard works good for doing this. One problem I had, somehow I inserted a section and wasn't able to figure out how to get rid of it. Observation so far: Good Calc: I spent the majority of the day in this as I'm working on the Information Systems budget for next fiscal year. This operates close to MS Excel, but there is a learning curve. First, in Excel you have File --> Page Setup for setting things like page orientation, scaling, print area, headers, footers, etc. Calc has those options, just in different places. Format --> Page has your margins, page orientation, headers and footers. The print area is under Format --> Page Range --> Define. Different. The autosum function still has the greek "E", but it's next to the formula bar rather then being on the toolbar (see picture). There also isn't a text box to type the zoom percentage you want, you have to click the magnifying glass on the toolbar, then you can type it in. One thing I know I don't like at this point, when you use of the delete key it brings up a dialog (see picture) asking you what you want to delete, which is nice, but SO annoying. Using backspace will just remove the data, which is usually what I wanted to do, but I'm so use to just using delete. Office suite: One thing I don't care for is if I click on File --> Exit in Writer for example, it closes Writer as well as any of the other StarOffice/OpenOffice applications that are running. This is annoying. You have to just File --> Close the application your in to exit just that one. Another strange bit is the Window menu lists not just the Writer files, but Calc and others when open. Different and I don't know if I care for it. That's it so far, at this point I still have a positive feeling using the suite.
