StarOffice/OpenOffice Challenge Conclusion

So after using StarOffice/OpenOffice for over a week exclusively, and trying to have some of the "power" users here at work try it with their documents, spreadsheets, etc. I found some incompatibilities. Mainly they are with the Calc program and existing MS Excel spreadsheets. Of minor annoyance to some users was the formatting of columns that were set to a specific width in Excel, but in Calc they were off and the text within the cell was jumbled. Nothing a quick adjustment of the column won't fix though. A major problem though was the use of PivotTable and PivotChart spreadsheets. They didn't work at all in Calc and had to be re-created manually within Calc. This is a big problem as the PivotChart's created in this department are distributed to others that have Excel. Sure you could re-create them in Calc, but if one of these is sent to someone that would require they re-create them in Excel. This problem actually proved to be the show stopper for us. It wouldn't be worth the time and training for only part of the organization while leaving a few on Excel. Especially with an incompatibility like this that is pertinent to our organization. So it looks like we'll be sticking with MS Office 2000 for now. On the home use front though, there isn't any reason someone couldn't use OpenOffice and get by just fine as most home users aren't going to create PivotTable or PivotChart spreadsheets.
