Failure Occurred Querying the Writer Status

For about a week every time Backup Exec would try to do differential backup on my MS Exchange 2003 Server it would fail with the message "Final error: 0xe000fed1 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status" It would then suggest consulting these three references under article ID V-79-57344-65233 on the Symantec site. After more then a week trying to work with Symantec through their DirectAssist support, which I feel wastes more time then anything, Symantec stated it was a problem with Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and that I needed to contact Microsoft. I opted to spend $99 to e-mail Microsoft instead of the $249 phone call for support. The Microsoft tech suggested doing a full and differential backup of Exchange on the Exchange Server using NTBackup. This worked perfectly both times and proved that the problem was Symantec. I contacted Symantec again, they said they would have to research this issue more about the Open File. That got me to thinking so I checked the properties of my backup job and found under Backup Job Properties --> Settings --> Advanced Open File --> Use Advanced Open File Option was checked. The way I understand this option is that I'm specifiying to the backup job to use a particular open file configuration for backup, which I selected Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service, which is what Exchange uses for backups. However, if I uncheck the Use Advanced Open File Option, and allow Backup Exec to choose to use the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service the backup runs just fine, no problems, 100% successful. You would think Symantec would suggest checking this option after I worked with them for 10 days on this problem.

Thanks for sharing Troy. We are experiencing the same issue here. Will try to follow your example and see what happens
