I often need to have a file copy of a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM that I can then upload to a server to use. To create this type of file I use the Disk Utility application in Mac OS X 10.5 as follows:
- Insert the CD or DVD into the optical drive
- Open the Disk Utility application
- Select the optical disc from the menu on the left
- Click on the File menu
- Click on the New command
- Select "Disk Image From...."
- Provide a file name for the image file
- Set "Image Format" to "DVD/CD Master"
- Make sure "Encryption" is set to "None"
- Click the "Save" button
- After the image is created, you need to change the ".cdr" file extension to ".iso"
