Dell Vostro A840 Wireless Driver for Windows XP

A friend of mine wanted to downgrade his Dell Vostro A840 laptop from Windows Vista Starter Edition to Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3.  So after he made a backup of his data, we wiped out the drive to install Windows XP.  We used nLite to create a new a new ISO with the latest Intel chipset drives, just to make sure it would detect the hard disk controller, and I threw in the Ethernet drivers as well.

After the system came up I was able to able to install drivers for most of the hardware, but the wireless network interface card just wouldn't show up no matter which driver I tried.  Everything I read said this was a Dell Wireless 1395 or 1397 card, but the drivers just wouldn't work.

Turned out that the wireless card in this particular model (perhaps because it's for Latin America, even though I used the Service Tag to confirm the hardware) was an Atheos wireless card and needed the driver in the Dell package R194080 to work (ftp.dell.com/comm/R194080.exe).  This took me about 26 hours before I could resolve it.  Hopefully it will save someone else a lot of time.
