Summary
I’ve been using a locked iPhone 4, using iOS 4.1 and up to the latest iOS 5.0 software, on the H2O Wireless Network since November 2010 without any problems. My plan is currently the $60 unlimited everything (phone, text & 3G data) plan. Below I outline the steps I took to make this locked iPhone 4 work on the H2O network with their data plan.
Note: This does not enable the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), or “picture messaging”, ability. There is currently no way that I have found to have BOTH 3G data and MMS working on a LOCKED iPhone 4. I have read that this is possible if you “jailbrake” your iPhone 4, however I don’t roll that way so I can’t verify this but do include the directions I’ve found below.
Get the SIM
First thing you need to do is purchase an H2O Wireless SIM card. You can do this online from their website here, or like I did from the local BestBuy store.
Modify the SIM
The H2O SIM card is the standard SIM size, but the iPhone 4 and newer uses the new micro-SIM (aka 3FF) form factor. While this micro-SIM format is physically smaller then the SIM format, the chip contact points are exactly the same.
Using this template and a pair of scissors (or perhaps a large kitchen knife) I was able to trim down the standard SIM to the micro-SIM format so that it fit correctly in my iPhone.
Activate the SIM
You now need to go to the H2O Wireless website and activate the SIM that you purchased. During this process you’ll need to select either the $50 unlimited phone + unlimited text + 250MB data plan or $60 unlimited phone + unlimited text + unlimited data plan.
The registration process took about 2 minutes for me, then I received an email with my new H2O Wireless phone number. You should now be able to send/receive phone calls and send/receive SMS (text) messages, however data (Internet) won’t work yet.
Configure the iPhone for H2O Wireless data
To use the iPhone 4 with the H2O 3G wireless data network, you need to have a configuration file so the phone knows how to talk to their data network. In the past you’d have to download the iPhone Configuration Utility, create your own custom configuration and then install it. However, H2O Wireless now makes it easy as they’ve created this configuration file for you.
To get the H2O-Config](https://www.h2owirelessnow.com/pageControl.php?page=IPhoneData) file, go here and enter your wireless phone number and you’ll receive a text message with the final steps to auto-configure your iPhone with H2O Wireless data.
At this point you should now be able to use the data capability of the iPhone, browsing the Internet using Safari, sending/receiving email, etc.
Enabling H2O Wireless Data & MMS on unlocked iPhone
Note: I haven’t performed these steps myself as I don’t want to “jailbreak” my iPhone. I cannot assist you with this process.
First, you’ll have to “jailbreak” your iPhone. If you choose to do this you should be able to find plenty of sites that offer directions on how to do this. I do not provide directions to do this here.
Second, follow the steps above to enable the H2O wireless data.
Third, open the app named “Cydia” on your phone, which is like an app store. Inside that search for an app named “APN Editing” which you’ll need to install.
You’ll configure your iPhone using the “APN Editing” application with the following settings:
MMS APN (Access Point Name): att.mvno MMS URL: http://mmsc.cingular.com Username: [leave it blank] Passowrd: [leave it blank] Proxy Address: wireless.cingular.com:80 Proxy Port: 80

I just did it with my unjailbreak and locked iphone 4 on iOS4.2.1 and bb 03.10.01 with H2O wireless. Thanks so much for the tip.
Does your iphone4 still works and what iOS version it is on now?
Yesterday I updated my iPhone (GSM) to the latest iOS 4.3 an hour after Apple released it and it's still working 100% without issues or problems.
hello I have iphone4 4.0.1 it will work with that update, 'cause i did all the steps you show and the phone show the 3G but it doesnt connect to anything
Jose,
Do you the $49.99/month plan with unlimited calling, text messaging and 50MB data?
If you go to the H2Owireless.com web site and check your balance, what do you see for your data balance?
When you downloaded the iPhone Configuration Tool, what did you name your profile? What did you use for the Access Point Name address?
Do you see this mobile profile on your iPhone?
Have you powered off the phone and powered it back on (restarting it)?
Thanks Troy! Works like a charm on my iphone 3g.
Dear Troy, I did everything word for word. Im having the same problem as Troy.
Everything seems fine. But wont connect to a service.

No issue for H2O wirless i am perfectly using my iphone. it is still working as i want.
Hi Troy,
I used it, and it works like a dream. The only thing the picture messaging, it won't work. Any tips! Please help Troy!
Shamika,
You cannot use the picture messaging (MMS) without unlocking your iPhone. I don't have directions on how to do that, sorry!
Question, please: I have the original iphone, awaiting my service to be opened, transferred to my iphone from an old phone (my telephone number I mean) ....... I am having issues with itunes and my access to my phone syncing .... HELP PLEASE!
Salon,
Your best bet to resolve this would be to contact AppleCare for assistance. I'm not able to help with iTunes & the iPhone.
The way your blog reads is that it's a piece of cake, that it totally switches over without any hassle. So I'm wonderng why I am having a 'hassle' and my phone isn't automatically ringing or syncing.... It has the usb cod & cd with blue music symbol. And I've plugged in my new sim card.
Salon,
I'm assuming that you've purchased your H2O wireless SIM card, activated it with H2O wireless and then installed it into your iPhone, is that correct? Once you've activated it with H2O wireless and connected the phone to iTunes to complete the activation, then you should be able to use the phone with the number that you received from H2O wireless.
Hey Troy
I have now tried this a few times and each time I am getting the notification "Cannot Open Page - Safari cannot open the page. - The error was: "there was a problem communicating with the web proxy server (HTTP).". Any tips? x
Alex,
Under Settings -> General -> Network do you have both Cellular Data and Enable 3G turned on?
Under Settings -> General -> Profiles do you see your H2O Wireless Data profile that you created?
Can you Remove the profile and re-create it using the iPhone Configuration Tool and verify the Access Point Name" is "att.mvno" (no quotes) and "Proxy Server and Port" is "proxy.mvno.H2OMobileweb.com" (no quotes).
Hey troy,
I am wondering if you are getting
3G speeds on your iphone 4 or just edge? I have the iphone 4 and will switch from simple mobile asap if the 3G speeds are there!
Thanks ,
Joe
Joe,
As long as I'm in a 3G coverage area, and have the 3G service turned on (Settings -> General -> Network -> Enable 3G then I do see fast speeds (haven't done a speed test), more so then when I just have the Edge (2G) network enabled.
Hello guys, and here's another way I want to share with you that will definitely help you unlock your iPhone 4, and that is thanks to a Gevey sim. This solution I found in www.unlockaniphone.org is what I recommend to my friends, for I had used this when I troubleshoot my iPhone and found out that it works great.
I got as far as emailing the .mobilconfig file to myself. I can see it, and when i clivk on it i get a screen "open, open in new window, copy" How can i install a new profile?
Ogeccut, is the file showing (like a PDF or Word file attachment does) or as a hyperlink? It should be like the PDF/Word file so when you press on it the screen slides to the right and gives you an option to Install
It was showing up as just an attachment. I was able to install the profile:
To install a configuration profile:
Connect the device to a USB port on your computer.
After a moment, the device appears in the Devices list in iPhone Configuration Utility.
Select the device, and then click the Configuration Profiles tab.
Select a configuration profile from the list, and then click Install.
On the device, tap Install to install the profile.
Everything works.
Thank you.
For those with the proxy error: Remove the proxy server from the configuration profile. All you need is the "att.mvno" APN.
Also, the version of configuration utility has been updated (I think), so it has a few new options to sign the profile. You don't have to sign it to use it--just export the profile and email it to yourself.
does the ip4 have to be jailbroken before the h2o sim will work?
does the ip4 have to be jailbroken before the h2o wireless sim will work?
No Danny, the phone can be LOCKED and it will still work
Dear Anonymous,
after months tried my data plan works it's finally working thank for u advice....
Question this will fit the MMS & Data plan right? Without the jailbreak?
Focuz,
It will accommodate the data plan without jailbreaking. If you want both, you have to jailbreak the phone.
fix*
sorry Im new at this, so If I jailbreak it I wont have any problems syncing it? Would I still be able to use the app store?
If you jailbreak your phone, it will sync with iTunes and you can use the App Store. However, you need to be cautious about future iOS software updates and wait for the jailbreak software to support the new version before upgrading your phone.
To jailbreak your phone for both data and MMS support, you'll need PwnageTool which will jailbreak your phone. After that it will install an app named "Cydia" on your phone, which is an app store. Inside that app store is an app named "APN Editing" which you'll need to install.
The settings would be as follows:
Cellular Data
APN: att.mvnoUser Name:Password:
MMS
APN: att.mvnoUser Name:Password:MMS Proxy: http://mmsc.cingular.comMMS/ Proxy: wireless.cingular.com:80MMS Message Size: 614400UUS UA Prof Url:
Thanks!
Hey I just activated my sim and when Im trying to make a call its says im not allow and I think its says gps 6170?
Did you activate your SIM card on the H2O wireless web site? Did you wait the 10 minutes for them to activate your new phone number?
Did you attach your iPhone to iTunes to activate it?
Troy does work with lastest firmware/baseband please let me knoe thank you.
Yes, I'm running the latest version of the software, no problems. Remember that this doesn't require you to jailbreak your or unlock your phone to work, it's working with the actual gold version.
I'm getting the same error as "Hey I just activated my sim and when Im trying to make a call its says im not allow and I think its says gps 6170?" I had tmobile on my unlocked iphone, worked fine then i switched to h2o, i activated it and added money to my account and it says the same thing.
Is there any problems with AT&T phone running on H20 Wireless and firmware updates from itunes? Will I be able to upgrade to ios5 this fall?
I just started my service with H20 with my iphone 4 and am getting data usage (Safari/email) without installing the program you mentioned. How is this accomplished?
Hi Troy! I'm using iOS 5 beta 2 on my iPhone and when i follow the steps, I can't get my data to work. Do you think the OS i'm using may be the problem. Let me know if this only work for iOS 4 so far.
It's probably something to do with it. I dint have iOS 5 yet so I can't tell you if the iPhone Configuration file will work or needs a newer version.
I will downgrade to iOS 4.3.3 and see if it works. I really did follow all the steps and downloaded the file. It's just when i power off WIFI to use 3G that i keep getting the error that my cellular data couldn't be activated.
Marcel,
When you go to the H2O Wireless website and check your balance, do you see a balance for your data? 100MB
Troy,
Just wanted to let you know that it worked for me after downgrading to iOS 4.3.4 today! Thank you so much for the tip. I spent a great deal of time looking for a way to get data on my phone without having to jailbreak it. Can't believe it finally worked!
Does this give you unlimited data? if not do you know of a hack for free data .... i have an iphone 4 on 4.3.3 if you know please let me know

No, it does not provide you unlimited data. H2O only offers, currently, 100MB of data. This guide simply allows you to use that 100MB with your iPhone.
H2O now has 250MB so I think I'm going to give this a try.
Hi! I just installed the way u said and I do have internet!! thanks alot, but still cant send and reseive MMS..((
HI, I just tried your instructions and it is working perfectly. Thank you.
It worked on ios 4.3.5 which is the lastest apple version thanks bud.
will this same thing work for an at&t branded xperia x10a
It's possible but I don't have one to test it
I am using this service it's was great on I phone before I am paying 150 a month now 60 thank u Sujeet pal
Troy, I need your help!!!! I went to a authorized dealer & the lady imported my number but it says no service. I tried calling h20 customer service and no answer? Help please
Make sure you have the H2O SIM installed in your phone. Next, make sure you've activated the SIM with H2O. Now power off your iPhone(hold down power button, slide red bar), then power it on. Now connect to iTunes and you should be able to make/receive calls
I have 4.3.5. And data works fine but mms doesn't work at all can you tell me what I need to do I already have the ability to edit the settings I just need to know if I'm using the right URLs
Unless you jailbrake your iPhone, you cannot have data AND MMS. With a locked iPhone you only get one. I'm hoping with iOS 5 and the fact that Apple sells unlocked phones now that we'll be able to have both.
The phone is jail broken I have the ability to edit my carrier settings. What do I need to do to get my mms working
hEY TROY! do i need to enter user name and password in advanced settings when i create utility?
Thanks,
Chuck
@kayess Open the app named "Cydia" on your phone, which is like an app store. Inside that search for an app named "APN Editing" which you'll need to install.
The settings would be as follows:
MMS APN (Access Point Name): att.mvno
MMS URL: http://mmsc.cingular.com
Username: [leave it blank]
Passowrd: [leave it blank]
Proxy Address: wireless.cingular.com:80
Proxy Port: 80
@sel no the username and password should be blank
Ok I had everything right but for some reason I can only receive mms I cannot send them for some reason Thanks for all your help by the way
Will you be updating to ios 5 and if so can you please let us know that in the comment section i would really aprreciate it.
I've updated my LOCKED iPhone 4 to iOS 5.0 and I'm still able to use it with the H2O Wireless network and their unlimited data plan.
I've also updated this post to make things a little easier to understand, along with some simplified directions and configuration information, thanks to H2O Wireless.
Enjoy!
